I heard alarm bells scream loudly in my ears as I hurriedly ran at my top speed, towards the brown mountains on the other side of the area we were in. The jail alarm was so loud you could still hear it from miles off, signalising to everyone a prisoner had escaped or either a fire had started. Which, coincidently, both had. Duce arrived at exactly midnight on-the-dot and brought out a match. I had thrown it down the hall from my cell at an old oak desk which started to spark and flame quickly. By the time people started to shout and scream about it the flames had escalated into a dancing blaze, surrounding most cells. Everyone had hurriedly evacuated the prison, the prisoners being put into straightjackets and cuffs as they were escorted away, but I hid in my cell, making it look empty. Here in angel cells, they don’t keep records of the prisoners, just what cells are in use, so they don’t ‘waste human paper’. Stupid rule or what? My cell was ticked as in use, but when the fire started to spread near my cell the warden ran for his worthless little life, leaving me hiding. Duce tried to use his angel magic to break or melt the window bars but to no avail, as there was a shield on the prison from any angel using its magic. I felt the scorching fire inch towards my sensitive wings and painfully singe the bottom of them. “Holy fucking shit! That’s hot! Hurry up Duce!” I exclaimed, pulling my wings sharply up against my back. “Fuck this shit!” he shouted before grabbing an axe from the emergency fire case which was stupidly on the outside of the building and lobbing away at the steel bars. Just as the blazing fire would have engulfed me he rapidly lifted me out and we ran like lightning. Our chains around our necks clanged vigorously against our chests and my silver bracelets jingled annoyingly. “Any idea where my card might be?” I shouted to Duce as we rushed through the dark forest, scratching our arms and legs on the trees and branches, but too caught up in the adrenaline to feel any pain. “Nope” he replied, eyeing the ace of spades on his silver chain hanging from his neck.

One thing I perhaps forgot to mention, our cards. It’s actually quite a complicated thing. The four Aces in a pack of cards: Diamonds, Spades, Clubs, and Hearts. There was a deep legend that surrounded these four cards and it became a shocking reality. The legend was based on four children, whom after many years of sharp pain and strong commandment had their spirits freed. Their spirits were released upon the unknown date of their death. The waking morning of their fate, their skin would pale to porcelain and their eyes would darken. Their bones would show through and their mighty strength would vanish. But only half of the legend had been discovered. These four children were not picked at random, no. Not like names picked out of Satan’s classy black top hat. They had to have special qualities, unlike any other. Individuals. One-of-a-kind. The qualities once held by the Queens and Kings, the eight monarchs of the deck. The cards were given to the chosen children on the split-second of their death, appearing around their necks on a solid silver chain. The cards were to protect them in the afterlife and help them find their true selves. The Kings and Queens needed knew heirs to their thrones of the afterlife, and their time was getting shorter.  I know what you’re thinking, how are cards and the afterlife connected? Well, it’s just one of those things. The thing to represent their personalities and all that they stand for. It’s hard to put into words, the legend the Kings and Queens created, but all you need to know, is that the legend came true. I and Duce are living proof. I think they may have got the wrong person when they chose me, though. “Trust you to lose your card, douche” Duce mocked, jumping onto a large rock and spreading his wings out before starting to gracefully yet aggressively fly in the air. Yeah, I lost my Ace card. We don’t exactly know what to do with our cards and what we even need them for, but I decided to make a paper aeroplane with mine. So now, I’m cardless. I’ve been searching for my card before I went to jail, but gave up once inside. Now I’m just running. Running from my past. I don’t want to be deported back to hell and I can’t stand another minute here! “Shuddit, manwhore” I joked along as I mimicked Duce’s movements and flew alongside him towards the mountains.

“What’s that?” I asked, seeing about twenty black silhouettes lining the mountain edges in the distance. “Your followers” Duce told me, winking. “Eh?” I asked, utterly confused. “You make it sound like I’m Jesus or something, what do you mean my followers?” I added, flying closer to the mountains. “We are the children from the legend. They angels and demons believe we can help them. So to some extent, I suppose you are Jesus” he replied. It took me a minute to understand. “You mean…People…Believe that we’re their…saviours?” I pieced together, unsure. “Sort of” Duce replied. We made a solid landing in front of the mountain and I gawped at the angels gathered. “We wish to be forgiven for our sins we’re about to commit, but we believe in you, and we must help. The legend has to come true” one of them said, a short boy with bleach blonde hair, emerald green eyes and the trademark wings, only a little smaller as he was a younger angel. I smiled at him, grateful. Angels would risk going to hell in hope for a better future? I looked at all the angels and smiled. One particular angel caught my eye. She looked to be sixteen, seventeen years old, had dark brown hair to her mid-drift with tints of black shining in the light, deep brown eyes that seemed to hold years of knowledge, and wore a long-sleeved black dress which finished above her kneecaps, a pair of plain black ankle boots and a bracelet on her right wrist. Of course she also had the typical grey angel wings. I’m not sure what drew me to her, but I couldn’t stop staring. It felt like we had some sort of connection. She looked at me, also wide-eyed and staring, and we were both silent as we felt the ground start to rumble like my prison guards’ stomach from underneath us. It felt almost as we were related, or cut from the same cloth. The shaking of the ground got heavier and the angels around us started to panic. “They’re coming!” I heard someone shout. People started screaming. “Faith, LET’S GO!” Duce said, violently nudging my hip and snapping me back to reality. I looked into the distance to see what everyone was shouting about. “The guardians! Go!” one middle-aged woman shouted to us, pointing in the distance. The guardians were the keepers of heaven and hell, making sure the world was in order, using any force when needed. “Shit!” I yelped, seeing everyone fly up towards the top of the mountain before I prepared to fly with them. I felt a warm hand grab my upper-arm weakly. I turned to the source of the hand. The girl was still staring at me as the guardians got closer. “We have to go!” I said, taking her hand off my arm and holding it firmly. Then I noticed something. A silver chain hiding under the collar of her dress. “FAITH!” I heard a demanding shout. Duce was calling me from the top of the brown rocky mountain. I shook off the fact that she had a similar silver chain to I and Duce and started to fly up the mountain, still holding the girls hand. She started to fly too, and we quickly reached the mountain top. All angels had made it to the peak of the mountain and the Guardians hurriedly climbed up the mountains surface in a ghost-like manner. “Where’re we going?!” I shouted to Duce as the mountain rocks began to crack. He gave me a look, one I can’t describe. But I know what it meant. We’re going home. The mountain erupted and lava flashed everywhere, rocks spawning off and colliding together. Who knew a mountain could be a volcano in disguise, huh? All the rocks began to float around us and seemed to glow a magical yellow. The rocks floated closer to us angels and crowded us as the Guardians were almost at the top of the mountain. “MERCURY, MERCY, TAKE US WITH THE POWER, FOR I AM THE SON OF SPADES…” Duce began to shout a spell to command the rocks. I turned to the un-named girl again and saw her looking into the sky. I could see what was attached to her chain now. I couldn’t believe my eyes. “TAKE US, WE WON’T LIVE BUT WE WILL FIT, WE REBELS SHALL MOVE!” Duce finished the spell off. The rocks all started to form boulders around the angels one-by-one. “Duce, she has a-!” rocks started to cover me, cutting off my sentence. “Good Luck everyone!” I heard Duce scream as rocks engulfed him. I hugged my knees and felt the warmth of the rocks heat my skin. Here we go; another chance. I felt the rock move around and butterflies invaded my stomach. That girl…she had a…she had the Ace of Diamonds on her chain…
